New York Police Department Provides Citywide Crime Statistics For June 2022

In early July, the New York police department provided a citywide crime report for June 2022. The NYPD reported that for the month of June 2022, shooting incidents declined compared with the month of June last year. Every patrol borough saw a decline in shooting incidents except for northern Queens. In June 2021, 165 citywide shooting incidents were recorded, whereas in June this year, 125 incidents were recorded. This was a 24.2% decline. This decline continued the downward trend in gun violence in the first half of 2022. Also, murder incidents dropped for the month of June 2022 as compared to June 2021. In June 2021, 38 murder incidents were recorded, whereas in June 2022, 26 incidents were recorded. This was a 31.6% decline.

According to the NYPD, 355 gun arrests were made in June this year, bringing the number of gun arrests made in NYC since the beginning of the year to 2,381. This is a 4% increase compared with 2021. From January 2021 to June 2021, the total number of gun arrests made by the NYPD was 2,290. Additionally, from January 2022 to June 2022, the NYPD got its hands on more than 3,700 firearms.

The decrease in shooting cases in NYC is a reflection of the combined sum of the gun-violence strategies that the NYPD has adopted, which include the following;

  • The Neighborhood Safety Teams
  • The Major Case Field Intelligence Team
  • The Gun Violence Suppression Division

For instance, the Major Case Field Intelligence Team is tasked with seizing “ghost guns,โ€ which are guns which can be made at home.

Regarding overall index crime, the NYPD reported that for the month of June 2022, there was a 31.1% increase as compared to June 2021. Burglary cases increased by 33.8% for the month of June 2022 compared with June 2021. In June 2021, 956 burglary cases were recorded, and in June 2022, 1,279 cases were recorded. Robbery saw a 31.6% increase. In June 2021, 1,137 robbery cases were recorded, and in June 2022, 1,548 cases were recorded. Grand larceny saw a 41% increase, with June 2022 seeing 4,467 cases recorded. Additionally, grand larceny auto increased by 25.9%. In June 2021, 907 grand larceny auto cases were recorded, whereas in June 2022, 1,142 cases were recorded.

According to the NYPD report, overall hate crimes reduced by 8% for the month of June 2022 compared with the month of June 2021. In June 2021, 64 hate crime incidents were recorded, whereas in June 2022, 59 incidents were recorded. However, hate crimes against the Jewish people increased for the month of June 2022 compared with June 2021. In June 2021, 18 cases of hate crimes against Jewish people were recorded, whereas in June 2022, 23 cases were recorded. This was a 28% increase. Hate crimes against Hispanics also increased. In June 2021, only one incident against Hispanics was recorded, and in June 2022, two incidents were recorded.
