New York Police Department Announces Citywide Crime Statistics for September 2023

On October 11, 2023, the New York Police Department posted the crime statistics for the month of September 2023 on its website. For the month of September 2023, overall crime went down in New York City, and shootings declined compared to the same month last year. Overall index crime decreased by 5.6% in NYC in September 2023 compared to the same month last year. In September 2022, there were 11,207 crimes in New York City, whereas in September 2023, there were 10,574 crimes. Shooting incidents in NYC reduced by 34.2% in the month of September 2023 compared to the same month in 2022. In September 2023, New York City witnessed 77 shooting incidents, whereas in September 2022, there were 117 shooting incidents. This drop in shooting incidents extended the 27.1% decrease in shooting cases through the first nine months of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. Between January and September last year, there were 1,043 shooting incidents in NYC, whereas between January and September this year, there were 760 shooting incidents.

In September 2023, the NYPD made 413 gun arrests, which led to the Department recovering over 500 illegal guns. Through the first nine months of 2023, the NYPD made 3,353 gun arrests and seized more than 5,000 illegal guns.

Again, NYC saw a drop in five of the seven index crime categories. The crimes that witnessed a reduction in the month of September 2023 are murder, rape, robbery, burglary, and grand larceny. These are the same crimes that saw a decrease in August. Murder went down by 27.9%. In September 2022, there were 43 murder cases in NYC. On the other hand, the NYPD recorded 31 murder cases in September 2023. Rape incidents went down by 16.7%. In September 2023, there were 120 rape incidents in New York City, whereas in September 2022, there were 144 rape cases in NYC.  Robbery incidents in New York City went down by 7.3%. In September 2022, there were 1,530 robbery incidents in NYC, whereas in September 2023, there were 1,419 robbery cases. Burglary and grand larceny went down by 27% and 9.4% respectively. Burglary cases dropped from 1,447 to 1,057, and grand larceny cases dropped from 4,588 to 4,155.

Felony assault and grand larceny auto cases went up in September 2023 compared to the same month last year. Felony assault increased by 4.5%. The NYPD recorded a total of 2,251 felony assault cases in September 2022, whereas in September 2023, the Department recorded 2,353 felony assault incidents. Grand larceny auto increased by 19.5%. There were 1,439 grand larceny auto cases in NYC in September 2023. In September 2022, there were 1,204 grand larceny auto cases.

Hate crimes in New York City went down by 14% for the month of September 2023 compared to the same month last year. There were 50 hate crime incidents in New York City in September 2022. In September 2023, there were 43 hate crime cases in the city.
