New York Police Department Announces Citywide Crime Statistics For September 2022
On October 7, 2022, the New York Police Department released the crime statistics for the month of September 2022. Overall, in September 2022, New York City saw a decrease in shootings and murders while the overall crime index increased. According to NYPD statistics, shooting incidents in New York City reduced by 13.2% for the month of September 2022 compared with September last year. September 2022 saw 118 shooting incidents recorded in NYC, whereas in September 2021, 136 shooting incidents were recorded. According to the NYPD, this overall decline in shooting incidents was driven by significant declines in northern Manhattan, the Bronx, southern Queens, and Brooklyn. Murder cases decreased by 23.5% for the month of September 2022 compared with September 2021. In September 2022, 39 murders were recorded in NYC. On the other hand, in September 2021, 51 murders were recorded in NYC.
The NYPD has worked tirelessly this year to ensure they reduce gun violence. From January 2022 to September 2022, the NYPD seized over 5,600 firearms. Since the beginning of the year to September 2022, the NYPD has made 3,601 gun arrests. This is a 5% increase in gun arrests compared with the first nine months of 2021.
According to NYPD statistics, the overall crime index in NYC increased by more than 15% in September 2022 compared with September 2021. September 2022 saw 11,057 incidents recorded, whereas, in September 2021, 9,596 incidents were recorded. This increase was driven by the fact that only two of the seven major index-crime categories saw decreases. The only other major index-crime category that saw a decrease in September 2022 compared to September 2021 was felony assault. In September 2022, Felony assault cases decreased by 1.3%. In September 2022, a total of 2,189 felony assault cases were recorded in NYC, whereas in September 2021, a total of 2,218 felony assault cases were recorded in NYC.
Robbery cases increased by 16.4% for the month of September 2022 compared with September 2021. In September 2021, the NYPD recorded a total of 1,295 robbery cases, whereas the Department recorded a total of 1,508 cases in September 2022. Burglary increased by 22.7%. In September 2022, the NYPD recorded 1,409 burglary cases, whereas in September 2021, the Department recorded 1,147 burglary cases. Grand larceny and grand larceny auto cases increased by 21.3% and 21.5%, respectively. The NYPD recorded 4,552 grand larceny cases and 1,215 grand larceny auto cases in September 2022, whereas in September 2021, the Department recorded 3,753 grand larceny cases and 1,000 grand larceny auto cases. The increase in the overall crime index in NYC was driven by the significant increase in burglary, grand larceny, and grand larceny auto.
Lastly, according to NYPD statistics, hate crimes increased by 19% for the month of September 2022 compared with September 2021. In September 2022, there were 56 hate crime incidents, whereas, in September 2021, there were 47 hate crime incidents. However, while the overall number of hate crimes increased for the month of September 2022, the number of hate crimes against Asians decreased. In September 2022, the NYPD recorded two hate crimes against Asians, whereas in September 2021, the Department recorded six hate crimes against Asians.
