New York Police Department Announces Citywide Crime Statistics for October 2023

On November 8, 2023, the New York Police Department released the crime statistics for the month of October 2023. For the month of October 2023, overall crime went down compared to the same month in 2022. The overall index crime for the month of October 2023 reduced by 3%. In October 2022, there were 11,197 major crimes in New York City, whereas in the month of October 2023, there were 10,858 major crimes.

Out of the seven index crime categories, four saw decreases in the month of October 2023. Murder saw the most significant reduction (26.7%). In October 2022, there were 30 murder cases in New York City, whereas in October 2023, the NYPD reported 22 murder incidents in NYC. Rape reduced by 19.3% for the month of October 2023 compared to the same month last year. In October 2023, there were 121 rape incidents in New York City, whereas in October last year, there were 150 incidents. Burglary cases decreased by 22% in the month of October 2023 compared to the same month the previous year. In October 2022, there were 1,441 burglary cases in NYC, whereas in October 2023, the NYPD recorded 1,124 burglary cases. Grand larceny declined by 7.1%. In October 2023, there were 4,321 grand larceny cases in New York City, whereas in the same month last year, there were 4,649 grand larceny incidents.

Robbery, felony assault, and grand larceny auto incidents increased in the month of October 2023 compared to the same month last year. Robbery increased by 3.5%. In October 2022, there were 1,498 robbery cases in NYC, whereas in October 2023, the NYPD recorded 1,550 robbery incidents. Felony assault cases increased by 6.9% for the month of October 2023 compared to the same month last year (2,332 v. 2,181). Grand larceny auto cases saw an 11.3% increase in October 2023 compared to the same month in 2022 (1,389 vs. 1,248).

Shooting incidents decreased by 8.1% for the month of October 2023 compared to the same month last year. In October 2022, there were 86 shooting incidents in NYC, whereas in October 2023, there were 79 incidents. This reduction extended the 25.7% reduction in shootings experienced in New York City from January to October compared to the same period in 2022 (839 v. 1,129). Most notably, between January and October 2023, 384 fewer people were shot in New York City compared to the same period in 2022. When it comes to the number of people murdered in New York City between January and October 2023, 45 fewer people were murdered compared to the same period in 2022. In October 2023, the New York Police Department made 361 gun arrests for gun possession, bringing the total number of gun arrests made between January and October 2023 to 3,735.

For hate crimes, there was a 124% increase in the month of October 2023 compared to the month of October 2022. There were 45 hate crime incidents in NYC in October 2022, whereas in October 2023, there were 101 incidents. This increase was led by a 214% spike in anti-Jewish incidents.
