New York Police Department Announces Citywide Crime Statistics for November 2023

On December 5, 2023, the New York Police Department posted the crime statistics for the month of November 2023 on its website. For the month of November 2023, overall crime went down again in New York City, and shootings continued to decline. Overall index crime went down by 4.1% in November 2023 compared to the same month in 2022. In November 2023, there were 10,009 crimes in New York City, whereas in November 2022, the NYPD recorded a total of 10,440 crimes. In November 2023, shooting incidents reduced by 18.8% in New York City compared to November 2022. There were 80 shooting incidents in November 2022. On the other hand, in November 2023, there were 65 shooting incidents. From January to the end of November 2023, 405 fewer people were shot in NYC compared to the same period last year.

In November 2023, New York City saw a drop in five out of the seven major index crime categories. There was a reduction in murder, rape, robbery, burglary, and grand larceny incidents. Murder cases in New York City went down by 6.5% in November 2023 compared to the same month in 2022. The NYPD recorded a total of 31 murder cases in November 2022, whereas in November 2023, there were 29 murder incidents in NYC. Rape declined by 4.3%. The NYPD recorded a total of 112 rape incidents in November 2023, whereas in November 2022, there were 117 rape incidents in New York City. Robbery incidents dropped by 9.7%, with November 2023 witnessing 1,383 robbery cases, down from the 1,531 cases recorded in November 2022. Burglary and grand larceny incidents decreased by 17.8% and 3.5%, respectively. Burglary went from 1,273 in November 2022 to 1,047 in November 2023, and grand larceny declined from 4,259 in November 2022 to 4,110 in November 2023.

The two major index crime categories that saw an increase in the month of November 2023 compared to the same month last year were grand larceny auto and felony assault. Felony assault cases rose by 0.9%. In November 2022, there were 2,092 felony assault cases in New York City, whereas in November 2023, there were 2,110 cases. Grand larceny auto increased by 7.1%. In November 2023, there were 1,218 grand larceny auto cases in New York City, up from the 1,137 incidents in November 2022.

According to the NYPD, overall crime reduced for the period between January 2023 and November 2023 compared to the same period last year. Between January and November 2023, there were 866 fewer crimes in NYC than the previous year.

In November 2023, arrests for major index crimes in NYC increased by 12.5%, and arrests across all categories increased by 14.8% compared to the same month in 2022. From January to November 2023, arrests for major index crimes in NYC increased by 12%, and arrests across all categories increased by 19.9% compared to the same period last year.

Finally, hate crimes increased by 33% for the month of November 2023 compared to November 2022. In November 2022, there were 72 hate crime incidents in NYC, whereas in November 2023, there were 96 incidents.
