New York Police Department Announces Citywide Crime Statistics For November 2022

On December 5, 2022, the New York Police Department released the crime statistics for the month of November 2022. For the month of November 2022, the overall index crime in New York City decreased compared with the same month last year. In November 2022, the overall index crime decreased by 1.2%, with 10,196 major felonies tallied in the month, down from the 10,323 recorded in November 2021. This decrease was greatly fueled by major declines in three of the seven major index-crime categories. Burglary cases decreased by 6% in the month of November 2022 compared with the same month last year, with 1,231 burglary cases tallied in November 2022, down from the 1,310 tallied in November 2021. Grand larceny cases decreased by 5.5% in the month of November 2022 compared with November 2021, with 4,187 grand larceny cases tallied in November 2022, down from the 4,430 cases tallied in November 2021. Rape incidents also reduced, though the NYPD believes this crime is underreported.

In the month of November 2022, overall shooting cases decreased by 32.8% in the city of New York compared with the same month last year. In November 2022, there were 80 shooting incidents in New York City, whereas, in November 2021, there were 110 shooting incidents. This decrease in shooting incidents added to the 16.2% decrease achieved between January 2022 and November 2022. The decrease in overall shooting incidents in New York City reflects the NYPD’S continued focus on fighting gun violence. The NYPD reported that from January 2022 to November 2022, it seized 6,638 guns, including 356 ghost guns. This is a 76% increase compared to the 202 ghost guns seized between January 2021 and November 2021.

In regards to murder cases, while murders year-to-date dropped by 11.1%, murder incidents increased in the month of November 2022, compared with November 2021. In November 2022, there were 30 murder incidents in New York City, whereas, in November 2021, there were 25 incidents. This was a 20% increase.

Robbery cases, felonious assault cases, and grand larceny auto cases also increased in the month of November 2022 compared with the same month last year. In November 2022, the NYPD recorded 1,491 robbery cases, whereas in November 2021, the Department recorded 1,439 robbery cases. This was a 3.6% increase. Felonious assault cases went up by 3% for the month of November 2022 compared with the same month last year (2,016 v. 1,957). Grand larceny auto cases went up by 9.4%, with 1,131 cases being recorded in November 2022. In November 2021, there were 1,034 grand larceny auto cases in New York City.

Lastly, regarding hate crimes, the NYPD saw a 70% increase, with 75 hate crime incidents being recorded in November 2022. In November 2021, the NYPD recorded 44 hate crime incidents. Hate crime incidents against Black people increased by 500% in the month of November 2022, compared with the same month last year (6 v. 1). Hate crime incidents against Jewish people also saw a huge rise, with November 2022 seeing a total of 45 cases recorded compared with the 20 cases recorded in November 2021.
