New York Police Department Announces Citywide Crime Statistics for June 2023

On July 6, 2023, the New York Police Department posted the crime statistics for the month of June 2023 on its website. For the month of June 2023, the NYPD witnessed a 3.9% decrease in overall index crime compared to the same month last year. In June 2023, the New York Police Department recorded 10,793 criminal incidents. In the same month last year, the Department recorded 11,235 criminal incidents. According to the NYPD report, the city saw a drop in five out of the seven major index crime categories. The only two index crime categories that saw a rise were felony assault and grand larceny auto.

For the month of June 2023, grand larceny auto increased by 22.8% compared to the same month in 2022. In June 2023, the NYPD recorded 1,391 grand larceny auto cases. On the other hand, in June 2022, the Department recorded 1,133 grand larceny auto cases. According to the NYPD report, the increase in grand larceny auto cases in New York City was driven by the theft of motorcycles and the exploitation of vulnerabilities in the ignition system of certain vehicle models. Felony assault cases increased by 0.9% for the month of June 2023 compared to the same month last year. For the month of June 2023, the NYPD recorded 2,555 felony assault cases. On the other hand, for the month of June 2022, the Department recorded 2,532 felony assault cases.

The five index crime categories that saw a drop in the month of June 2023 are murder, rape, burglary, robbery, and grand larceny. For the month of June 2023, murder went down by 3.1% compared to the same month in 2022. The New York Police Department recorded a total of 31 murders in June 2023, whereas, in June 2022, the Department recorded a total of 32 murder cases. Rape cases dropped by 24.1% in June 2023 compared to the same month last year. In June 2023, the NYPD recorded 107 rape cases, whereas, in June 2022, the Department recorded 141 rape cases. Burglary saw a 24.8% decrease, with the NYPD recording 325 fewer cases this June than last June. Grand larceny dropped by 4.8%. The NYPD recorded 4,304 grand larceny cases in June 2023, whereas in June 2023, the Department recorded 4,523 grand larceny cases.

Shooting incidents dropped by 16.8% for the month of June 2023 compared to the same month last year. In June 2022, there were 125 shooting incidents in NYC, whereas, in June 2023, there were 104 incidents. This reduction in shooting incidents extended the 24.7% reduction in shooting incidents in NYC through the first half of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022.

Finally, the NYPD reported that hate crimes in NYC reduced by 18% for the month of June 2023 compared to the same month last year. In June 2022, the NYPD recorded 57 hate crime cases. On the other hand, in June 2023, the Department recorded 47 cases.
