New York Police Department Announces Citywide Crime Statistics for July 2023

On August 3, 2023, the New York Police Department posted the New York City crime statistics for the month of July 2023 on its website. For the month of July 2023, overall crime went down in New York City, and shootings continued to decline. Overall, index crime went down by 5.7% in July 2023 compared to the same month in 2022. In July 2023, there were 11,165 crimes in New York City, whereas, in July 2022, the NYPD recorded a total of 11,838 crimes. In July 2023, shooting incidents declined by 35.4% in New York City compared to July 2022. There were 175 shooting incidents in July 2022, whereas in July 2023, there were 113 incidents. From January to July 2023, shooting incidents have declined by 26.5% compared to the same period in 2022. From January to July 2023, there were 596 shooting incidents in New York City. On the other hand, from January to July 2022, there were 811 shooting incidents.

In July 2023, New York City witnessed a drop in five of the seven major index crime categories. The crimes that dropped in the month of July 2023 are murder, rape, robbery, burglary, and grand larceny. Murder cases in New York City went down by 35.3%. According to the NYPD, in July 2022, there were 51 murder cases in New York City, whereas in July 2023, there were 33 cases. Rape declined by 17.3%. The NYPD recorded a total of 124 rape incidents in July 2023. In July 2022, the department recorded 150 rape cases. Robbery cases went down by 13.6%, with July 2023 witnessing a total of 1,513 robbery cases, down from the 1,752 cases recorded in July 2022. Burglary and grand larceny declined by 17.6% and 8.5% respectively. Burglary went from 1,360 in July 2022 to 1,120 in July 2023, and grand larceny declined from 4,634 in July 2022 to 4,241 in July 2023.

Cases of grand larceny auto and felony assault increased in the month of July 2023 compared to the same month in 2022. Grand larceny auto increased by 18.5%. In July 2023, there were 1,493 grand larceny auto cases in New York City, up from the 1,260 incidents in July 2022. Felony assault increased by 0.4% in the month of July 2023 compared to the month of July 2022 (2641 v. 2631). When it comes to hate crimes, there was a decline in July 2023 compared to July 2022. In July 2022, there were 53 hate crime incidents in NYC, whereas, in July 2023, there were 49 incidents.

Through the first seven months of 2023, NYC saw reductions in five out of the seven major index crimes. The crimes that dropped through the first seven months of January 2023 are murder, rape, robbery, burglary, and grand larceny.
