New York Police Department Announces Citywide Crime Statistics For July 2022

On August 5th, 2022, the NYPD announced citywide crime statistics for July 2022. According to the report, shootings, murders, and other crimes increased significantly in New York City in July 2022 compared to July 2021. Also, according to the report, overall index crime in New York City increased in July 2022 compared to the same month in 2021.

Shooting incidents increased by 13.4% in July 2022 compared to July 2021. The city recorded 178 shootings in July 2022, whereas in July 2021, the city recorded 157 shootings. According to the NYPD report, the increase in shootings was driven by upticks in southern Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island. Murder incidents increased by 34.3% in July 2022 compared to July 2021. The city recorded 47 murders in July 2022, up from the 35 recorded in July 2021.

The spike in shootings and murders combined with an increase in robberies, thefts, and felonious assault incidents boosted the overall index crime in the city by 30.5% in July 2022 compared with July 2021. In July 2022, New York City recorded a total of 11,619 crimes, whereas, in July 2021, the city recorded a total of 8,906 crimes. Out of the seven major index-crime categories, six saw increases. The only category that witnessed a reduction in July 2022 compared with July 2021 was rape. In July 2021, 149 rape incidents were recorded, whereas in July 2022, 142 incidents were recorded.

Grand larcenies increased by 40.6% in July 2022 compared with July 2021. In July 2022, the NYPD recorded 4,588 grand larceny cases, whereas, in July 2021, the NYPD recorded 3,262 cases. Robberies increased by 37.2% in July 2022 compared with July 2021. In July 2022, the NYPD recorded 1,730 robberies, whereas, in July 2021, the NYPD recorded 1,261 robberies. Grand larceny auto increased by 26.2%. In July 2022, the NYPD recorded 1,256 grand larceny auto cases, whereas, in July 2021, the department recorded 995 cases. Burglary increased by 25.6%. In July 2022, the NYPD recorded a total of 1,325 burglaries, whereas, in July 2021, the department recorded 1,055 burglary cases. Lastly, according to the NYPD, felonious assault increased by 17.8%, with July 2022 recording 2,531 cases. In July 2021, the department recorded 2,149 felonious assault cases.

Despite the increase in murders and shootings in July 2022, overall for the year 2022, the NYPD reported that murders went down 4.2% and shootings went down 8.7% compared to the first seven months of 2021. Additionally, the NYPD reported that citywide gun arrests through July stood at a 27-year high. Through the first seven months of the past year, the NYPD made 2,687 gun arrests, whereas, during that same period in 2022, the department made 2,752 arrests.

Regarding hate crimes, the NYPD saw a significant increase in July 2022 compared with July 2021. Overall, New York City saw a 50% increase in hate crimes in July 2022 compared with July 2021 (54 v. 36), with hate crimes against the Jewish increasing by 114%. In July 2022, there were 15 cases of hate crimes against the Jewish, whereas, in July 2021, there were 7 cases.
