New York Police Department Announces Citywide Crime Statistics For January 2023

On February 3, 2023, the New York Police Department released the crime statistics for the month of January 2023. After 2022 ended with a decrease in major felonies, 2023 started with an increase in crime, even though slightly. For January 2023, the overall index crime increased by 4.1% compared to January 2022. In January 2022, the NYPD recorded 9,672 criminal cases; in January 2023, the Department recorded 10,067 criminal cases. According to the NYPD, this increase in crime was fueled by a 14.9% increase in felony assault. In January 2022, the NYPD recorded 1,790 felony assault cases. On the other hand, in January 2023, the Department recorded 2,056 felony assault cases. The other major crime categories that increased in January 2023 compared to January 2022 are robbery, burglary, and grand larceny auto.

In January 2023, burglary cases increased by 7.2% compared to January 2022. In January 2022, the NYPD recorded 1,211 burglary cases, whereas in January 2023, the NYPD recorded 1,298 burglary cases. Robbery increased by 5.3% in January 2023 compared to January 2022. In January 2022, there were 1,265 robbery cases in New York City. On the other hand, there were 1,332 robbery cases in New York City in January 2023. Grand larceny auto saw a 5.1%, with the NYPD recording 1,223 grand larceny auto cases in January 2023 compared to 1,164 cases in January 2022.

Shootings and murders were still down for the period. Murders dropped by 3.2% in January 2023 compared to January 2022 (30 v. 31), and shootings reduced by 26.3% (73 v. 99). According to the New York Police Department, murders and shootings declined because of the Department’s enhanced public safety investment across boroughs, in all neighborhoods. The number of shooting victims also dropped across New York City. In January 2022, there were 110 shooting victims across New York City, whereas, in January 2023, there were 86 shooting victims across the city.

Rape and grand larceny cases also reduced for January 2023 compared to January 2022. The NYPD recorded 132 rape cases in January 2022 and 130 cases in January 2023. This was a 1.5% decrease. Grand larceny was reduced by 2%, with January 2023 having a total of 3,998 cases recorded compared to 4,079 cases in January 2022.

Regarding arrests for the overall index crimes, the NYPD reported that the number of arrests recorded in January 2023 is the highest that has ever been seen in the month of January since 1999, which is almost 25 years ago. Arrests for the overall index crimes in New York City rose by 29.6% for January 2023 compared to January 2022. In January 2022, there were 3,410 arrests, whereas, in January 2023, there were 4,420 arrests.

Finally, according to the New York Police Department, there was no change in the number of hate crimes recorded in New York City in January 2023 compared to January 2022. In January 2023, 35 incidents were reported; the same number registered in January 2022.
