New York Police Department Announces Citywide Crime Statistics For February 2023

On March 3, 2023, the New York Police Department released the crime statistics for the month of February 2023. According to the NYPD statistics, February 2023 saw a 5.6% decrease in overall index crime compared to February 2022. In February 2022, the NYPD recorded 9,304 criminal cases. On the other hand, in February 2023, the NYPD recorded 8,785 criminal cases. This decrease resulted in a year-to-date reduction in overall index crime compared to 2022. From January to February 2022, the NYPD recorded 18,976 criminal cases, whereas from January to February 2023, the NYPD recorded 18,909 criminal cases.

Regarding the decrease in overall index crime for the month of February 2023, the NYPD reported that crime fell in six out of the eight patrol boroughs. Robberies decreased by 10.5% for the month of February 2023 compared with the same month last year. There were 1,290 robbery incidents in New York City in February 2022, whereas in February 2023, there were 1,155 incidents. More specifically, according to the NYPD, robberies significantly decreased in the housing and transit bureaus and in over 50% of the city’s police precincts.

Shootings, murders, and hate crimes also decreased for the month of February 2023 compared to February 2022. In February 2023, shooting incidents decreased by 14.7%. There were 64 shooting incidents in New York City in February 2023, whereas in February 2022, there were 75 shooting incidents. According to the NYPD, the reduction in shooting incidents was driven by a sharp decline in the Queens, Bronx, and Northern Manhattan. Murder decreased by 27.8% in February 2023 compared to February 2022. There were 36 murder incidents in NYC in February 2022, whereas in February 2023, there were 26 murder incidents. Hate crimes declined by 69% (27 v. 86) for the month of February 2023 compared with February 2022.

The number of gun violence victims across New York City also fell (by 2.4%) in February 2023. In February 2022, there were 84 gun violence victims across NYC, whereas in February 2023, there were 82 victims. So far, the NYPD has seized 1,125 illegal guns from New York streets. This is a 1.3% increase compared with the same period last year.

In Housing, the New York Police Department drove a 5.2% decrease in major crimes for the month of February 2023 compared with the same month last year. Shootings decreased by 31% in all public housing areas for the month of February, and robberies fell by 11.8%.

In the subway system, major crimes decreased by 9.1% in February 2023 compared with February 2022. Subsequently, transit index crimes went down by 19.4% for the months of January and February compared to the same period last year.

Finally, when it comes to the number of arrests for index crimes made by the NYPD in February, the number went up this year by 8.9%. There were 3,498 arrests for index crimes in February 2022, whereas in February 2023, there were 3,811 arrests.
