New York Police Department Announces Citywide Crime Statistics for December 2023

On January 4, 2024, the New York Police Department posted the crime statistics for the month of December 2023 on its website. For the month of December 2023, overall crime went up in New York City, and shootings continued to decline. The overall index crime increased by 2.4% in December 2023 compared to the same month in 2022. In December 2023, there were 10,547 crimes in New York City, whereas in December 2022, the NYPD recorded 10,298 crimes. In December 2023, shooting incidents reduced by 15.3% in New York City compared to December 2022. There were 85 shooting incidents in December 2022. On the other hand, in December 2023, there were 72 shooting incidents. From January to the end of December 2023, 416 fewer people were shot in NYC compared to the same period in 2022.

In December 2023, New York City saw a drop in only three out of the seven major index crime categories. There was a reduction in murder, burglary, and grand larceny auto incidents. Murder cases in New York City went down by 33.3% in December 2023 compared to the same month in 2022. The NYPD recorded a total of 36 murder cases in December 2022, whereas in December 2023, there were 24 murder incidents in NYC. For the whole of 2023, murders fell by 11.9%. There were 438 murder cases in NYC in 2022, whereas in 2023, there were 386 murder incidents. Burglary reduced by 14.3% in the month of December 2023 compared to December 2022 (1085 vs. 1266) and by 13.1% in 2023 (13758 vs. 15827). Grand larceny auto witnessed a 4% reduction in December 2023 (1260 vs. 1312). However, for the whole of 2023, grand larceny auto incidents increased. Grand larceny auto cases went from 13,741 in 2022 to 15,802 in 2023. This was a 15% increase.

Rape incidents increased by 17.3% in December 2023 compared to December 2022 (129 vs. 110). However, for the whole of 2023, the number of rape incidents was lower than the number recorded in 2022 (1455 vs. 1625). This was a 10.5% drop. Similarly, robbery incidents increased by 22.1% for the month of December 2023 compared to December 2022 (1572 vs. 1287) but reduced by 3.1% for the entire year (16902 vs. 17442). Grand larceny incidents increased by 1.5% in December 2023 compared to December 2022 (4323 vs. 4259) but reduced by 2.5% for the year 2023 compared to the year 2022. Felony assault cases went up by 6.2% in the month of December 2023 and by 6.3% in 2023.

The NYPD reported that arrests for major index crimes in NYC increased by 9.5% in December 2023 compared to December 2022 and by 11.8% for the whole of 2023. Arrests for all crimes increased by 15.5% in December 2023 and by 19.5% for all of 2023.

Finally, hate crimes or bias incidents increased by 26% for the month of December 2023 compared to December 2022, from 47 to 59. However, for the entire year, the number of hate crimes reduced by 5%, from 650 to 618.
