New York Police Department Announces Citywide Crime Statistics For December 2022

On January 5, 2023, the New York Police Department released the crime statistics for the month of December 2022. Once again, New York City saw a decrease in overall crime. To be precise, December 2022 saw an 11.6% decrease in crime compared with December 2021. In December 2021, the NYPD recorded a total of 11,496 crimes. On the other hand, in December 2022, the Department recorded 10,164 crimes.

Out of the seven major index-crime categories, five categories saw a decrease. Murder decreased the greatest. In December 2022, 34 murders were recorded in New York City, whereas in December 2021, 46 murders were recorded. This was a 26.1% decrease. Grand larceny followed with a 25.9% decrease being recorded. In December 2022, the NYPD recorded 4,210 grand larceny cases, while in December 2021, the Department recorded 5,680 grand larceny cases. For the month of December 2022, rape cases decreased by 11.5%. In December 2022, the New York Police Department recorded 108 rape cases; in December 2021, 122 rape cases were recorded. Burglary and robbery decreased by 10.2% and 8.3%, respectively. Burglary cases decreased from 1,376 cases in December 2021 to 1,236 cases in December 2022, and robbery cases reduced from 1,396 to 1,280.

According to the NYPD, the overall index crime for Q4 of last year was also down compared with Q4 of 2021. In the fourth quarter of 2021, the NYPD recorded 32,159 criminal cases. On the other hand, in the fourth quarter of 2022, the NYPD recorded a total of 31,686 crimes. This was a 1.5% decrease. This decrease was led by a decline in murder, grand larceny, and burglary. Murder decreased by 16.7%, grand larceny decreased by 8.5%, and burglary decreased by 0.9%.

Regarding the overall index crime for the calendar year 2022, New York City saw a 22.4% jump. For the calendar year 2021, the New York Police Department recorded a total of 103,388 crimes, whereas, for the calendar year 2022, the Department recorded a total of 126,537 crimes. However, for the calendar year 2022, murder cases decreased by 11.3%. In 2022, 433 murder cases were reported, whereas, in 2021, the NYPD recorded 488 murder cases.

Shooting incidents decreased once again. December 2021 saw 120 shooting incidents, whereas December 2022 saw 85 incidents. Significant reductions in Brooklyn and Queens drove the decrease in shooting incidents. For the year 2022, shooting incidents went down by 17.2% compared to 2021. In 2022, there were 1,294 shooting incidents, whereas, in 2021, there were 1,562 shooting incidents. Because of the decrease in shooting incidents, there was a decrease in shooting victims in New York City for the month of December 2022 compared with December 2021. To be precise, there was a 16.5% decrease in shooting victims (1,566 v. 1,876).

The number of illegal guns taken off the streets of NYC in 2022 was 7,135, and the number of gun arrests made in 2022 was 4,627. In her statement, Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said that the NYPD is focused on reducing gun violence by treating it as a crisis.
