New York Police Department Announces Citywide Crime Statistics For August 2022

On September 6, 2022, the New York Police Department released the crime statistics for the month of August. Since the beginning of the year, crime in New York City has been increasing, and the month of August was not any different. According to the NYPD, reported cases in almost all crime categories increased in August, apart from murder. The NYPD reported that in August 2022, only 27 murder cases were recorded, whereas, in August 2021, 59 murder cases were recorded.

According to the NYPD, overall crime in New York City increased by 26% in August 2022 compared to the same month last year. In August 2022, 11,357 crimes were recorded, whereas in August 2021, 9,014 crimes were recorded. Robbery cases in New York City increased by 38%. In August 2022, there were 1,630 robbery cases in NYC, whereas, in August 2021, there were 1,181 cases. Grand larceny increased by 34.7%. In August 2022, the NYPD recorded 4,687 grand larceny cases, whereas, in August 2021, 3,480 cases were recorded. Burglary cases saw a 31.1% increase, with the NYPD recording 1,356 cases in August 2022 and 1,034 in August 2021. Grand larceny auto increased by 20.5% (1,210 v. 1,004).

Overall, hate crime cases also increased for the month of August 2022 compared to the same month last year. In August 2022, a total of 55 hate crime cases were recorded, whereas August 2021 saw 39 hate crime cases being recorded by the NYPD. Hate crimes against Asians increased by 40%. In August 2022, 7 incidents against Asians were recorded. August last year saw five incidents against Asians. Hate crimes against black people increased by 400%. The NYPD recorded five incidents against black people in August 2022, whereas in August 2021, the Department recorded only 1 case.

Regarding the Department’s efforts to remove illegal firearms from the streets, the NYPD made 405 gun arrests in August 2022. In the same month last year, the NYPD made 349 gun arrests. The number of gun arrests made in August means that the total number of gun arrests made from January 2022 to August 2022 is 3,170. This is a more than 4% increase compared with the gun arrests made from January 2021 to August 2021. Additionally, according to the report, the New York Police Department made more than 4,000 arrests for complaints of major felony crimes in August 2022. In August 2021, the Department made 3,450 arrests.
