New York Police Department Announces Citywide Crime Statistics for April 2024

On May 7, 2024, the New York Police Department posted the crime statistics for the month of April 2024 on its website. For the month of April 2024, overall crime went down in New York City, and shootings continued to decline. Overall index crime decreased by 4.9% in April 2024 compared to the same month in 2023. In April 2024, there were 9,652 crimes in New York City, whereas in April 2023, the NYPD recorded 10,148 crimes. In April 2024, shooting incidents decreased by 15.5% in New York City compared to April 2023. There were 71 shooting incidents in April 2023, whereas in April 2024, there were 60 shooting incidents. There was a 13.8% decline in shooting victims in April 2024 compared to the same month last year (69 vs. 80). From the beginning of 2024 to the end of April, 65 fewer people were shot in NYC. This was an 18.7% decline compared to the same period in 2023. In April 2024, the NYPD took 581 firearms off the streets. The NYPD attributes these downward trends to the thousands of additional officers sent to shooting-prone locations every day around NYC.

In April 2024, New York City saw a drop in five out of the seven major index crime categories. There was a reduction in murder, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny, and grand larceny auto incidents. Murder cases in New York City went down by 30.3% in April 2024 compared to the same month in 2023. The NYPD recorded a total of 33 murder cases in April 2023, whereas in April 2024, there were 23 murder incidents in NYC. Felony assault reduced by 1.9% in April 2024 compared to April 2023 (2,2,70 vs. 2,314). Burglary witnessed a 10.6% reduction in April 2024 compared to April 2023 (1,003 vs. 1,122). Grand larceny and grand larceny auto reduced by 6.9% and 10.9% respectively. Grand larceny dropped from 4,051 to 3,772, and grand larceny auto from 1,273 to 1,1,34. In April 2024, nearly 500 fewer crimes happened in NYC compared to April 2023.

Rape and robbery are the two crime categories that saw an increase in NYC in April 2024 compared to April 2023. Rape incidents increased by 5.1% in April 2024 compared to April 2023 (124 vs. 118). However, since the beginning of 2024 to the end of April, fewer rape incidents were recorded in NYC compared to the same period last year (491 vs. 498). Robbery, which remained flat in March, increased by 7.2% for the month of April 2014 compared to April 2023 (1,326 vs. 1,237).

The NYPD reported that arrests for major index crimes increased in NYC by 5.4% in April 2024 compared to April 2023 (4,460 vs. 4,233). From the beginning of January 2024 to the end of April, the NYPD arrested 1,624 more people than the same period last year (18,439 vs. 16,815).

Hate crimes or bias incidents increased by 39% in April 2024 compared to the same month in 2023, from 46 to 64. This was fueled by anti-Jewish acts and anti-Muslim incidents.
