New York Police Department Announces Citywide Crime Statistics For April 2023

On May 3, 2023, the New York Police Department released the crime statistics for the month of April 2023. For the month of April 2023, the overall index crime went up by 3.8% compared to the same month last year. In April 2022, the city of New York witnessed a total of 9,616 criminal cases. On the other hand, in April this year, the New York Police Department recorded a total of 9,981 criminal cases. According to the NYPD report, this increase was fueled by felony assaults, auto theft, and grand larceny. Felony assaults increased from 2,103 in April 2022 to 2,153 in April 2023, a 7.1% increase. Auto theft, also called grand larceny auto, increased from 939 in April 2022 to 1,283 in April 2023, a 36.6% increase. Grand larceny went from 3,915 in April 2022 to 3,980 in April 2023, a 1.7% increase. Rape cases also increased in April 2023 compared to April 2022. There was a 9.3% increase in rape cases. In April 2022, there were 108 rape cases in New York City, whereas in April 2023, there were 118 cases. In its report, the NYPD stated that it would keep encouraging rape victims to come forward.

However, the city did witness a drop in some of the index crime categories in April 2023. Specifically, New York City saw a decline in murder, burglary, and robbery cases. Murder cases dropped from 34 in April 2022 to 32 in April 2023, a 5.9% decrease. Burglary dropped from 1,249 cases in April 2022 to 1,095 cases in April 2023, a 12.3% decrease. According to the NYPD, there was a decrease in the burglaries of both commercial establishments and residences. Robbery cases dropped by 3.8% for the month of April 2023 compared to the same period last year. In April 2022, there were 1,268 robbery cases in New York City, whereas in April 2023, there were 1,220 cases.

When it comes to shooting incidents, there was a 31.4% drop in the month of April 2023 compared to the same period one year ago. In April 2022, there were 105 shooting incidents in New York City, whereas in April 2023, there were 72 incidents. In its continued efforts toward reducing gun violence in New York City, the NYPD made 375 gun arrests in April 2023 and seized 340 firearms. Overall, from January 2023 to April 2023, the police have seized 2,281 guns from the streets of NYC.

Finally, hate crimes in New York City increased for the month of April 2023 compared to the same month last year. In April 2022, there were 36 hate crime incidents in New York City. On the other hand, in April 2023, there were 47 hate crime incidents in New York City.
