A Look Back: 2014 to 2021

On top of giving an update on crime statistics, in the December 8, 2021 report, the NYPD also looked back on the past eight years. According to the NYPD, the past eight years indicate that New York City has experienced significant crime reductions. Overall index crime has reduced by 11% since 2013. In 2013, 101,755 index crimes were recorded. On the other hand, since 2000, when 169,424 index crimes were recorded, overall index crime has reduced by 46%.

Another gain that the NYPD celebrates in the report is the fact that six out of eight NYPD patrol boroughs reported declines in crime over the last eight years. In its December 8, 2021 report, the NYPD stated that technology played a huge role in helping the department achieve these gains. For instance, after police officers received smartphones, they were able to read the text of 911 calls, directly contact the people who called, dial-up 911 histories of city addresses, and search criminal and warrant status. Therefore, technology adoption in the NYPD has assisted in the implementation of its precision policing model.
